It gives me no pleasure to write this but my initial concern for the longevity of this series turned out to be well-founded as ABC scrapped it after 13 episodes were completed. But much worse than that - in one of the most inexplicable decisions ever made by a network, they decided not to show episodes 11 and 13. With our heroines all in mortal danger at the end of epsiode ten, ABC then screened episode 12 with no apology or explanation, then did not show the final episode at all. Good news is that the show is a big hit in the U.K. and all 13 episodes WILL be aired there so expect to be able to watch the 'missing' eps on the web not long after that.
The omens don't look too
good for Eastwick, the new ABC series that premiered on September 23rd
2009. That's not to say it wasn't a very entertaining show – to my mind it was
and I am looking forward to seeing more, but it's the THIRD attempt to make a
series based on John Updike's original novel and the feature film "The Witches
Of Eastwick" and the first two didn't make it past the pilot.

In 1992 a pilot was made which was not taken up, and ten years later another attempt was made, this time starring among others that "Desperate Housewife" Marcia Cross, and "Life On Mars'" Jason O'Mara as Daryl Van Horne. That pilot didn't go to a series either so it was a brave attempt on ABC's part to feel that third time would be the charm, but the series opened to a big audience, 8.3 million to be precise and although coming second in its time slot, to CSI:New York, it still produced the biggest audience for an opening episode of a new series on ABC since "Lost" For the ten o'clock hour.
Critical reviews were mixed, with some likening the show to "Sex In The City" or "Desperate Housewives" with witches. Most agreed that the show was well-cast and it certainly has a fair sprinkling of big names including Rebeccca Romijn (ex Ugly Betty) as 'Roxie Torcoletti', Jaime Ray Newman (ex Eureka) as 'Kat Gardener', Lindsay Price (ex Lipstick Jungle) as 'Joanna Frankel', "Due South"'s Paul Gross as 'Daryl Van Horn', Sara Rue from "Less Than Perfect", as 'Penny Higgins', and the star of "Kyle XY", Matt Dallas playing Roxie's boyfriend. Wow, it was so weird to see 'Kyle' all grown up and normal! Did his belly-button grow back?
One actress, Veronica Cartwright, the lady who was covered with ants in one of the opening scenes, and then suffered a stroke, had had a large role in the 1987 film version where Jack Nicholson famously played the devilish Daryl Van Horne.
As with most TV shows nowadays the opening episode had a lot of background music including "Baby Did A Bad Thing" by Chris Isaak, and the incidental music played out to the newly-created witches discoveries of their powers. All in all, I found it to be a very satisfying opening episode, superb performances by the three sexy witches and the promise of a very entertaining series to come.
